The life of Nashville-based singer/songwriter Julie
Lee has always been a lesson in assemblage art. She grew up in
Maryland on a steady diet of family stories, jazz and folk music,
learning early the connection between history and the creative
act. She began her career as a visual artist and taught English
for two years in Budapest, Hungary, yet was always mesmerized
by the raw ability of music to convey and preserve a story. After
relocating to Nashville and experiencing the rich heritage of
Southern blues, bluegrass and folk music, Julie began to experiment
with songwriting, assembling melodies and stories like a patchwork
quilt. As a songwriter, Julie Lee’s songs have recently been
recorded by Alison Krauss. Her talents quickly earned raves from
fellow artists, resulting in opening touring slots with Alison
Krauss in New England as well as Vigilantes of Love’s Bill Mallonee
and Pierce Pettis in the UK.
With her smooth, lilting voice,
which gracefully slips across the borders of musical genre,
Julie Lee’s new CD Stillhouse Road offers a timeless collection
of songs. Featuring some of the most talented musicians in Nashville,
including Alison Krauss, Vince Gill and slide guitar player
Colin Linden (O’ Brother, Where Art Thou), Stillhouse Road is
a quilt of bluegrass, jazz, blues, and folk. And much like the
appeal of a quilt, Julie Lee is not afraid to let the seams show.
Whether singing about her family or exploring the deepest implications
of faith, each of Julie Lee’s raw, homespun songs carries with
it a common thread of a time-tested hope and the possibilities
that love can afford. Julie Lee’s new CD, Stillhouse Road is
set to be released by Compadre Records on October 5, 2004.
